This collection consists of papers relating to the service of Charles H. Benton in the "2nd Mounted Rifflers" of the Confederate Army. He was a surgeon with the outfit. The first item is an 1863 pass for Benton to be able to move around Richmond, Virginia. The second item is a March 22, 1864, receipt for items purchased by Benton. The next two documents relate to Benton's discharge from the army. The first item certifies that Charles H. Benton will not take up arms against the United States government. It was signed May 1, 1865. The second item certifies Benton took "the oath prescribed by the President of the United States in his proclaimation of 1863." This was signed on May 22, 1865.
